BOSOM. We put the things which we Job xix. 27.most value into our Bosoms. Job concealed the hope of his restoration in his own Bosom, there he locked up the words and promises of his Job xxiii. 12. Prov. xvii. 23. Luke vi. 38. Luke xvi. 22, 23. Ecclus. ix. 1. 1 John i. 18.God. The wicked Man receives presents taken out of the bosom, things of the greatest value. And Jesus Christ in the Gospel says, that if we do good to others, we shall receive the reward of it, which will be poured forth plentifully into our Bosom.
The Wife of our Bosom; be not jealous over the Wife of thy Bosom, or her who rests in thy bosom, is an expression very familiar in Scripture, signifying a lawful Wife.
Lazarus was carried into Abraham’s bosom, as a favourite Child is received within the Arms and Bosom of his Father. S. John tells us, that the Son of God is in the bosom of the Father, thereby describing his perfect union with him. The well beloved Apostle lay with his head in our Saviour’s bosom at his last Supper with his Apostles; because it was then customary to lie down at Table with the head turn’d towards it, and the feet from it. Thus S. John who was below Jesus, was near him with his head, and as it were in his bosom.
