Bethoron

BETHORON. The same in all probability as Bethora, Bethra, Bether and Bitthar. The Scripture mentions two cities of this name, one called Upper Bethoron, the other Lower Bethoron. The Israelites of the Tribe of Ephraim, having received Bethoron as part of their allotment, made a Jos. xxi. 22.cession of it to the Levites. It was, according to Eusebius, twelve thousand paces, or four leagues from Jerusalem, towards Sichem or Naplouse, that is to say, to the north of Jerusalem. He adds, that the upper Bethoron was built by Solomon, and the lower resigned to the Levites for their habitation. Josephus places Bethoron at about an hundred furlongs from Jerusalem1. S. Jerom says, that S. Paula passed through both the Bethorons in her way from Naplouse to Jerusalem.
