Bethaven

BETHAVEN, the same as Bethel. After Jeroboam the Son of Nebat had set up his golden calves at Bethel, the Hebrews, who were in the interest of the house of David, in derision called this city Bethaven1; that is to say, the house of nothing, or the house of iniquity, instead of Bethel, the House of God, the name which Jacob formerly gave it, when he had the vision there of the mysterious Ladder, made use of by the Angels in ascending and descending from Heaven to Earth. See hereafter Bethel.
