BETHANY, was fifteen furlongs, or about two miles from Jerusalem, at the foot of the Mount of Olives, eastward of Jerusalem, on the way from Jericho to Jerusalem. There it was that Martha and Mary dwelt with their brother Lazarus, whom Jesus Christ rais’d from the dead. There it was likewise, that Mary pour’d out the perfume upon our Saviour’s Head. We have already taken notice in the article of Bethabara, that the Latin copies of S. John, ch. i. 28. read Bethania instead of Bethabara. See Suidas on Bethania; several Greek as well as Latin copies are in this place altered.
