BERITH or Baruth, a City of Phœnicia, lying upon the Mediterranean, between Biblos and Sidon, four hundred furlongs Northward from this last City1.
It is a question whether the Scripture speaks at all of this place. Some are of opinion, that the God Berith, taken notice of above by us, under the name of Baalberith, was worshipped here, and gave this City its appellation; others derive it from Beroe, the Daughter of Venus and Adonis, who was the Deity most honoured in this Country; others again think the word Berith comes from Bearoth, Wells or Springs. There are more Cities than one of this name in 2 Sam. viii. 8.Palestine. David carried off a great deal of brass from the towns of Betah and Berothac in Syria.
