1 Macc. xiii. 37.BAHEM. It is said in the first Book of Maccabees, that King Demetrius wrote to the High Priest Simon in these terms, Coronam auream & Bahem quam misistis, suscepimus. Some think that Bahem signifies pearls, others an habit1. The Greek instead of Bahem reads Baïnan, which Grotius derives from Baïs, the branch of a palm-tree. This opinion seems to be the best. It was common to send crowns, and branches of palm-trees in gold, in the way of presents to Kings, who were conquerors.
