Baaras

BAARAS, or Baaris, or Baru. Eusebius1 and S. Jerom make mention of a place called Baru or Baris near Cariatha. Now Cariatha according to their account, is ten miles West of Medaba. And elsewhere2 they tell us, that Beelmaüs, or Beelmeon, is two miles from Esbus near Baaru. Lastly, Josephus3 says, that to the North of Machærus there is a Valley called Baaras, where a wonderful Root of the same name was found, which was of the colour of fire, and towards the evening cast forth rays like those of the Sun. He relates many particulars concerning this Plant, which seem very extraordinary, and which many look upon as fabulous. Nevertheless F. Eugenius Rogers speaks of them, as one who was an Eye-witness of them, and fully convinced of what Josephus says.
