Josh. xv. 47.AZOTH, or according to the Hebrew reading Ashdod1, was assigned by Joshuah to the Tribe of Judah, but was possessed a long time by the Philistines. This was a maritime City, and had a Port upon the Mediterranean. It was situated between Askelon and Akron ; or between Jamnia and Askelon, as it is said in Judith iii. 2. in Græco ; or between Gaza and Jamnia, as Josephus says, Antiq. xiii. 23. All this may be easily reconciled by saying, that it lay between these Cities, but not immediately, nor in the same sense. See the Map. Azoth or Azotus was one of the five Governments belonging to the Philistines. Herodotus says2, that Psammetichus chus King of Egypt, lay nine and twenty years before Azoth, and that of all the Cities we know of, none ever maintained so long a siege. The Text of the Maccabees informs us, that Judas Maccabæus was killed on Mount Azotus.
