Assumption (I)

I. ASSUMPTION, a term particularly made use of in the language of the Church, to signify the death of the Holy Virgin; and, according to some Ancients, and many Moderns, her resurrection, which happened three days after her death, and her elevation up into Heaven. But it must be confessed, that all the particulars which have been published concerning the death of the Blessed Virgin; and what some Authors since the fifth Age have written of it appears to be extremely dubious, after what has been written on this subject in these latter Ages. The Reader may see in particular, M. de Tillemont, Tom. 1. Notes 13, 14, 15. on the Holy Virgin. We shall not enter into any nice examination of this History, which relates rather to Church History, than a Dictionary of the Bible, since there is nothing said in Scripture either of the Death or Assumption of the Virgin.

II. ASSUMPTION
