III. AROER, in the Tribe of Judah, 1 Sam. xxx. 28. which may be understood likewise of Aroer beyond Jordan. David dwelt for some time in the land of Moab, and might have left some of his Relations at Aroer. But in Joshuah xv. 22. and in the Septuagint we read Aroer or 2 Kings xviii. 34. xix. 13. Isai. x. 9. xxxvi. 19. xxxvii. 13. Jerem. lxix. 23.Aroel, which may very well be Aroer of Judah; and Eusebius and S. Jerom speak of Aruïr, twenty miles from Jerusalem towards the North. Aroer in Heb·ew signifies Heath; it is very possible therefore, that several places in the country may have taken their name from Aroër, understood in this signification.
