1 Chr. ii. 22.AR, Areopolis, Ariel of Moab, or Rabbath-Moab. All these names signify the same City, the Capital of the Moabites, situated upon the river Arnon, which divides it in two. Theodoret1 calls it simply Ariel. Eusebius2 says the same thing, and adds, that the idol of these people, probably Moabites, was called Ariel. E Isa. xvi.7, 11.piphanius says, that a small tract of land, adjoining to that of Moab, Iturǽa, and the Country of the Nabathæans, is called Arielitis3. The Prophet Isaiah calls it the City with walls of burnt brick; ad muros cocti lateris; in Hebrew, Kirharescheth, or Kirjath-hares. St. Jerom says h this City was entirely destroyed by an earthquake, when he was a young man. We believe Charac-Moba, or Charax- Moab, to be the same with Ar and Areopolis.
