Anammelech

ANAMMELECH. It is said in the second book of Kings, that the inhabitants of Sepharvaim, who had been sent from beyond the Euphrates into the Country of Samaria, burned their Children there in honour of Anammelech and Adrammelech. We are of opinion that Adrammelech signifies the Sun, and Anammelech the Moon. Adrammelech imports a magnificent King, and Anammelech a gentle King. The Eastern People worshipped the Moon under the name of a Deity, and offer’d human Sacrifices both to Sun and Moon.1 Some Rabbins imagine, that Anammelech was figured like a Mule, others describe him in the form of a Quail or a Pheasant; but this is very uncertain.
