Anak

ANAK, Anakim, famous Giants in Palestine. Anak, the Father of the Anakims, was the Son of Arba, who gave Ch. xiv. 15. Ch. xv. 14. Num. xiii. 23.his name to Kirjath-Arba, or Hebron. Anak had three Sons, Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, who produced a great many others, terrible for their fierceness and their extraordinary stature. The Hebrews said, that in comparison of these monstrous Men, they were but Grass-hoppers. Some have thought that the name of Phœnician, given to the Canaanites, and particularly to the Sidonians, came from Bene-Anac, Sons of Anak. Others derive from it the Greek word Anax, which signifies King or Master. Caleb, assisted by the Tribe of Judah, took Kirjath-Arba, and destroyed the Anakims in the year of the World 2559.
