Alphæus (1)

  1. ALPHÆUS, the Father of St. Mat. x. 3. Luke vi, 15.James Minor, first Bishop of Jerusalem. Alphæus was the Husband of Mary, who is believed to have been Sister to the holy Virgin1; for which reason James is called the Lord’s Brother. Many are of opinion that Luke xxiv. 18.Cleophas mentioned by St. Luke, and Alphæus are the same Person, Alphæus being his Greek name, and Cleophas his Hebrew or Syriac name, according to the custom of this Province, where the Men generally had two names.
