Abel the Great

ABEL THE GREAT, is a large Stone 1 Sam. vi. 18, 19. in the Year of the World 2888. before J. C. 1112. before the vulg. Æra 1116.found in a Field belonging to one Joshua a Bethshemite, on which the Ark was placed when it was sent back by the Philistines. It was called by this Name, which signifies great Mourning; probably by reason of the great Number of Bethshemites that were destroyed by God on this Occasion; for the Scripture tells us, that fifty thousand threescore and ten Bethshemites were smitten for looking into the Ark of the Lord.
