On the Epistle — The Eighteenth Method

The Epistolary Method ¹ was used by those who expounded the divine scriptures by letters and epistles, sent especially to friends who consulted them. Of their number, among the Greeks, was Isidore of Pelusium, who, in explaining the sacred volumes, wrote up to ten thousand letters; among the Latins, Jerome, and sometimes Augustine and Ambrose, of whom very many epistles of the holy oracles survive. To append an example of this Method I judge to be superfluous.
