The first book of the Holy Library, with the title page, dedication to Pius V, and general preface of the whole eight-book work: the canon of the sacred books set in order. Sixtus enumerates the books of the old Testament in three supputations — after the twenty-two Hebrew letters, the twenty-four Greek, and the twenty-seven with the doubled letters — and lays out seven partitions of the canon; then gives the argument, author, and time of every book of both Testaments in their first order; then the scriptures of the second order, from Esther and Tobias to the Maccabees, the end of Mark, and the Apocalypse; then the apocrypha inserted into Scripture, with the third and fourth books of Esdras and the appendices of Job and the Psalter; and closes with a recapitulation distributing every volume into protocanonical, deuterocanonical, and apocryphal — the terms this book gave the Church.
