Question 217. When was that name instituted?
QUAESTIO CCXVII. Quando institutum fuerit illud nomen?
Post haec quaeritur, Quando institutum fuerit illud nomen?
Et videtur, quod ab aeterno.
1. Luc. II, 21: Priusquam in utero conciperetur.
2. Item, Matth. I, 21: Vocabis nomen ejus Jesum. Glossa: "Non imponens quod ab aeterno impositum est." Item, Glossa: "Non decuit tam gloriosum nomen prius ab hominibus appellari, sed excellentiori natura, ne homo videatur machinator hujus nominis." Item, alia Glossa: "Sicut a Christo Christiani, sic et in utraque nostra circumcisione a Jesu, id est, a salvatore salvati vocamur. Quod nomen non solum antequam concipiamur in utero Ecclesiae per fidem, sed etiam ante tempora saecularia a Deo nobis vocatum est."

QUESTION 217. When was that name instituted?
After these things it is asked when that name was instituted.
And it seems that it was from eternity.
1. Luke 2:21: Before he was conceived in the womb.
2. Likewise, Matthew 1:21: You shall call his name Jesus. The Gloss says: "Not imposing what has been imposed from eternity." Likewise, the Gloss says: "It was not fitting that so glorious a name be first called by human beings, but by a more excellent nature, lest a human being seem the contriver of this name." Likewise, another Gloss says: "As Christians are called from Christ, so also in each of our circumcisions we are called saved from Jesus, that is, from the Savior. This name was called by God for us not only before we are conceived in the womb of the Church through faith, but even before secular times."
To the contrary:
1. Luke 2:22: After the days were fulfilled, etc.
2. Likewise, the Lady imposed it, or Joseph; therefore it was in time 1.
