QUAESTIO CV. Utrum sciverit Musicam?

Post haec quaeritur specialiter de musica.

Et videtur, quod in beatissima Virgine fuerit ejus cognitio.

1. Nam tam in veteri lege quam in nova fuerunt cantores et usus cantus ad cultum Dei: cantus autem recte scitur per musicam: ergo ad cultum Dei pertinet scientia musicae: ergo fuit in beatissima Virgine.

2. Item, Quidquid perfectissimo auditui fuit delectabilius ad audiendum, illud maxime harmonicum fuit: sed auditus Filii Dei nobilissimus auditus fuit, vox matris sibi ad audiendum delectabilissima: ergo summe harmonica: ergo beatissima Virgo effectum musicae habuit in summo ¹.

QUESTION 105. Whether she knew Music?

After this inquiry is made specifically about music.

And it seems that knowledge of it was in the most blessed Virgin.

1. For both in the old law and in the new there were singers and use of song for the worship of God. But song is rightly known through music. Therefore the knowledge of music pertains to the worship of God. Therefore it was in the most blessed Virgin.

2. Likewise, whatever was more delightful to the most perfect hearing to hear was most harmonious. But the hearing of the Son of God was the noblest hearing, and the voice of his mother was most delightful for him to hear. Therefore it was supremely harmonious. Therefore the most blessed Virgin had the effect of music in the highest degree ¹.
