Question 106. Whether she knew Astronomy?
QUAESTIO CVI. Utrum sciverit Astronomiam?
Post haec quaeritur de astronomia.
Cum enim legitur, Genes. I, 1: In principio creavit Deus caelum et terram, etc., exponunt ibi sancti expositores plures caelos.
Item, ibidem, v. 16: Fecit Deus duo luminaria magna.
Item, ibidem, v. 14: Ut sint in signa et tempora.
Item, ibidem, v. 7: Divisit aquas quae erant sub firmamento, etc.
Ex his omnibus patet, quod in sacra Scriptura agitur de sideribus et stellis, de quibus sunt scientiae astronomiae: ergo astronomia est necessaria ad theologiam: ergo beatissima Virgo scivit eam 1.
QUESTION 106. Whether she knew Astronomy?
After this inquiry is made about astronomy.
For when it is read, Genesis 1:1: In the beginning God created heaven and earth, etc., the holy expositors there explain several heavens.
Likewise, in the same place, verse 16: God made two great lights.
Likewise, in the same place, verse 14: That they may be for signs and seasons.
Likewise, in the same place, verse 7: He divided the waters which were under the firmament, etc.
From all these things it is clear that in sacred Scripture there is treatment of heavenly bodies and stars, concerning which the sciences of astronomy exist. Therefore astronomy is necessary for theology. Therefore the most blessed Virgin knew it 1.
