Question IX. Whether the Annunciation was made in Galilee
Quaestio IX. Utrum in Galilaea facta fuerit Annuntiatio?
Post hoc quaeritur de regione in qua annuntiatus fuit. Et dicit Evangelium, quod in Galilaea 1.
§ I. Sed contra: 1. Christus Judaeis promissus fuit et exhibitus: ergo in terra eorum concipi debuit. 2. Item, In Judaea natus, passus, et sepultus est: ergo et in Judaea nuntiari debuit. 3. Item, Ipse dicit: Non sum missus nisi ad oves quae perierunt domus Israel 2: si ergo eis tantum missus fuit, inter eos concipi debuit. 4. Item, Salus ex Judaeis 3, et non ex Gentibus: ergo si dicitur, quod propter hoc Dominus in Galilaea natus est, quia Propheta hoc praedixit: Populus qui ambulabat in tenebris 4, etc.: hoc nihil videtur esse, cum non propter hoc impleta sit prophetia, quoniam sic praedixit: sed ideo Propheta praedixit, quoniam sic futurum fuit. Unde ubicumque sic dicitur: Hoc autem factum est ut impleretur Scriptura, sensus est: Et sic Scriptura impleta est.
§ II. Responsio. Dicimus, quod annuntiatio et conceptio Dominica fieri debuit in Galilaea, et propter factum quod fiebat, et propter finem ratione cujus fiebat. 1. Dominus enim incarnatus fuit, ut Judaeos et Gentiles salvaret. Et propterea in regione quae ab utrisque inhabitabatur, conceptio et annuntiatio fieri debuit. Quod autem ab utrisque inhabitabatur, patet per Prophetam dicentem: Trans Jordanem Galilaeae Gentium 5. Et per Evangelistam dicentem: Ascendit autem Joseph a Galilaea, de civitate Nazareth, in Judaeam 6. Et sic in regione communi concipi voluit, qui pro omnibus nasci voluit: non enim Judaeorum Deus est tantum, sed etiam Gentium 7. 2. Item, Regio illa suo nomine proprietatem Incarnationis manifestissime expressit. Galilaea enim interpretatur revelatio, sive transmigratio. In hac autem annuntiatione fiebat suorum secretorum revelatio, quando Verbum quod erat in principio apud Deum, et lucem inhabitat inaccessibilem, quam nemo umquam vidit, Verbum hoc, inquam, caro factum est
Question IX. Whether the Annunciation was made in Galilee.
After this the inquiry is about the region in which he was announced. And the Gospel says that it was in Galilee 1.
§ I. But on the contrary: 1. Christ was promised and shown to the Jews; therefore he ought to have been conceived in their land. 2. Likewise, he was born, suffered, and was buried in Judea; therefore he also ought to have been announced in Judea. 3. Likewise, he himself says: I have not been sent except to the sheep that have perished of the house of Israel 2; therefore, if he was sent only to them, he ought to have been conceived among them. 4. Likewise, Salvation is from the Jews 3, and not from the Gentiles; therefore if it is said that the Lord was born in Galilee because the Prophet foretold this: The people who walked in darkness 4, etc., this seems to be nothing, since the prophecy was not fulfilled for this reason, because he so foretold it, but rather the Prophet foretold it because it was going to be so. Hence wherever it is said in this way, But this was done that the Scripture might be fulfilled, the sense is: And thus the Scripture was fulfilled.
§ II. Response. We say that the Lord's announcing and conception ought to have been made in Galilee both on account of the fact that was being done and on account of the end for the sake of which it was being done. 1. For the Lord was incarnate so that he might save Jews and Gentiles. And therefore the conception and announcing ought to have been made in a region that was inhabited by both. That it was inhabited by both is clear through the Prophet saying: Beyond the Jordan of Galilee of the Gentiles 5. And through the Evangelist saying: But Joseph went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, into Judea 6. And thus he willed to be conceived in a common region, he who willed to be born for all; for he is not God of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles 7. 2. Likewise, that region by its name most manifestly expressed the property of the Incarnation. For Galilee is interpreted revelation or transmigration. But in this announcing there was made the revelation of his secrets, when the Word that was in the beginning with God, and dwells in inaccessible light, whom no one has ever seen, this Word, I say, was made flesh
