In the Latin councils many Greeks were often present, just as in the Greek councils Latins were present; for this is the condition of universal councils. But I call them Latin because they were celebrated in the West, and Greek because they were celebrated in the East.
At Rome in the Lateran, in the year 660, a council was celebrated under Pope Martin I. Then the Fathers held these works as genuine works of Dionysius the Areopagite, as is clear from session 3, page 122. For there Martin, the most holy and most blessed Bishop of the holy Catholic and Apostolic Church of God of the city of Rome, said: “Let those whose concern it is bring into the acts the codex of Saint Dionysius, Bishop of Athens.”
Theophylact, chief of the notaries of the holy Apostolic See, said: “According to the command of your blessedness, bringing it from the venerable library of your see, I have before my hands the codex of blessed Dionysius. What do you command?”
Martin, the most holy and most blessed Bishop of the holy Catholic and Apostolic Church of God of the city of Rome, said: “Let the codex of blessed Dionysius be received; and from the letter deposited there, directed to Gaius, let that passage about which the matter is being handled, of which Cyrus made mention in his chapter for the approval of his novelty, be read again in order before the holy Council.”
And Paschal, regional notary of the Apostolic See, receiving the testimony itself translated from Greek into Latin, read it again, containing as follows: “From Saint Dionysius, from the letter directed to Gaius, at the passage: ‘Not performing divine things according to God, nor human things according to man, but, God having been made man, showing us a certain new God-manly, that is, theandric, operation.’”
Afterwards Martin and the other Fathers approve these as the words of Dionysius, which, as we have already said often, are extant today in the fourth Letter to Gaius.
The eighth general synod, under Eugene IV, at Ferrara, session 7, receives the oration of Symeon Metaphrastes on the life of Saint Dionysius. In that oration, as was said above, these works of our Dionysius are reported as genuine works of blessed Dionysius the Areopagite.
