In the mountains the cities were 11 (v. 51), in the deserts 6 (v. 62). But all the subtotals placed hitherto being brought into one sum, the cities given to the tribe of Judah were 76, together with very many villages, townships, and hamlets. But Calvin says: “there are numbered 113 cities, with towns and villages.” But so great a sum never existed — even if we call into the number all the villages and towns which are named in the text. For [they] would be at most 87, as [is] clear from [the things] said.
