The Chaldee Targum affirms [it] outright, in these words (Cant. 3, v. 5): “When the seven peoples heard that the children of Israel were about to possess their land, they rose up together and cut down the trees, and stopped up the fountains of waters, and destroyed their [own] cities, and fled.” Yet no indication of this thing appears in the Scriptures. Let the credit [of it] rest with that Chaldee [Targum] — to whom, however, the Jewish Rabbis assent, as they are wont.
