Of the Wars: Caput VI

Question LI. What offspring [came] from this marriage of Rahab and Salmon?

Boaz (or Booz) was born of the marriage of Rahab and Salmon; then others, in the tribe of Judah; at last CHRIST JESUS, our Lord and Saviour. But concerning that first [Boaz] there are some difficulties, which I point out at the end of Ruth, where this genealogy is handed down, ch. 4, qq. 17 and 18. Now that [saying] of Hecuba concerning Troy fits Jericho:

“Whoever trusts in a kingdom, and, mighty, reigns in a great hall, and fears not the fickle gods, and has given his credulous mind to glad affairs — let him look on me, and on thee, O Troy. Never did Fortune bring greater proofs [of] on how frail a ground the proud stand: the prop [of empire], overthrown, has fallen.” [Seneca, Troades 1–6]
