Of the Wars

Question I. How many were Joshua's wars against the Canaanites?

It could be said that there was ONE war, which however consisted of various sieges, assaults, and battles, and was waged over a long time. For so today we call [it] the “Hungarian” and the “Belgian” [war], which for so many years now — alas! — and with so many and so deadly contests, in so many and so scattered places, endures. Yet for the sake of a greater distinction, [these wars] can be numbered as several, in respect of the cities or the enemies against whom the fighting was done — and these chiefly FIVE: that of Jericho [Hierichuntinum], that of Ai [Haiense], that of Gibeon [Gabaonicum], that of Adoni-zedek [Adonisedechianum], [and] that of Jabin [Iabinicum], or the “Northern” [war] [seu Aquilonare].
