Question IV. Where were the OTHER 12 stones set up in the Jordan, and were they brought into it from one or the other bank?

Masius will [have them] set up on the bank toward Jericho. But [they] were in the middle channel of the Jordan; because [it has been] proved above [that] the priests’ feet stood in the middle. And these [stones] were placed in their station, and under their feet. But [some], in Abulensis (q. 1[2]), assert [that they] were brought hither from the other bank; yet the text does not assert [it]. Since [the text], just as it indicates the terminus from which and to which in [the case of] the first 12, would seem [that it] was going to indicate [it] in [the case of] these too, if they had been brought from elsewhere. Moreover, since [there] was abundance of stones in the Jordan, why would [it] have been necessary to bring [them] in? But Abulensis (in the cited quest.) censures the text on account of the word “he placed” [posuit], since in the Hebrew [it] is “he erected,” in the Greek likewise ἔστησεν [estēsen]; and a reason is added, because “placing” signifies [that] something is set in a place where [it] was not before, [whereas] “erecting” signifies [that it] was already in the same place — but otherwise [disposed]: before, indeed, sunk down or lying [flat], but now taken up and standing. Yet [one] easily meets this censure, if we say [that] there is also “placed” somewhere that which was already there before, but [now] in another manner and position; and again, that [something] is “erected” somewhere which was not there even before. As when the name of God is “placed” in Jerusalem (2 Kings [Reg.] 2 [23]; 2 Chron. 33 v. 7); when a “deserted land” is “placed” (Isa. 5 v. 6); when a “city” is “erected” somewhere — an arch, a title [inscription], a column (1 Sam. [Reg.] 15 v. 12; 2 Sam. [Reg.] 18 v. 18; 1 Kings [Reg.] 7 v. 21). Although [it] can also be said [that] those stones were placed in another place than [where] they were. For although they had hitherto been in the Jordan, [they were] not, however, in that place of the Jordan where the priests were standing. These [things] are probable; yet that [is], I think, more probable which the author of the Marvels of Sacred Scripture (bk. 2 ch. 1) hands down — [and] Augustine himself (On the [Seasons], sermon 60), and [as] I was saying in the Joshuan booklet (num. 46) — [namely] that these [stones] were transferred from the Jericho bank and the fields of Gilgal.
