1. Joshua therefore, the son of Nun, sent from Setim two men [as] spies in secret, and said to them: Go, and consider the Land, and the city [of] Jericho. Who, proceeding, entered the house of a harlot woman, by name Rahab, and rested with her. 2. And it was reported to the king of Jericho, and [it was] said: Behold, men have entered hither by night, of the sons of Israel, to explore the Land. 3. And the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying: Bring forth the men who came to thee, and entered thy house: for they are spies, and came to consider the whole Land. 4. And the woman, taking the men, hid [them], and said: I confess, they came to me, but I knew not whence they were; 5. and when the gate was being shut in the darkness, they also went out together — whither they are gone I know not: pursue [them] quickly, and you will catch them. 6. But she herself made the men go up to the flat roof [solarium] of her house, and covered them with the stalks of flax which were there. 7. But those who had been sent followed them by the way which leads to the ford of the Jordan; and when they [the pursuers] had gone out, immediately the gate was shut. 8. Not yet had those who were hiding fallen asleep, and behold, the woman went up to them, and said: 9. I know that the Lord has delivered the Land to you; for the terror of you has rushed upon us, and all the inhabitants of the Land have languished [grown faint]. 10. We have heard that the Lord dried up the waters of the Red Sea at your entrance, when you went out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan — Sihon and Og, whom you slew. 11. And hearing these [things] we were greatly afraid, and our heart languished, nor did there remain in us spirit [breath, courage] at your entrance: for the Lord your God, he himself is God in heaven above, and on earth below. 12. Now therefore swear to me by the Lord, that as I have done mercy with you, so you also may do with the house of my father; and give me a true sign, 13. that you save my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all that is theirs, and deliver our souls from death. 14. Who answered her: Be our soul [life] for you unto death — provided [only] thou betray us not; and when the Lord shall have delivered the land to us, we will do mercy and truth with thee. 15. She let them down therefore by a rope from the window; for her house adjoined [clung to] the wall. 16. And she said to them: Go up to the mountains, lest perhaps [those] returning meet you; and there hide for three days, until they return, and so you will go by your way. 17. Who said to her: We will be blameless [innocent] of this oath by which thou hast adjured us, 18. if, as we enter the Land, this scarlet cord [funiculus coccineus] be the sign, and thou bind it in the window through which thou hast let us down—
18. (…this scarlet cord be the sign…) and gather thy father and mother, and thy brothers and all thy kindred into thy house. 19. Whoever shall have gone out of the door of thy house, his blood shall be upon his own head, and we shall be blameless [alieni, strangers to it]. But the blood of all who shall be with thee in the house shall redound [fall back] upon our head, if anyone touch them. 20. But if thou wilt betray us, and utter this discourse abroad, we shall be free [clean] of this oath by which thou hast adjured us. 21. And she answered: As you have spoken, so be it done; and sending them away that they might go, she hung the scarlet cord in the window. 22. But they, walking, came to the mountains, and remained there three days, until those returned who had been in pursuit; for [these], seeking through every way, did not find them. 23. When these [pursuers] had re-entered the city, [the spies] turned back, and the explorers descended from the mountain; and, the Jordan being crossed, they came to Joshua the son of Nun, and narrated to him all that had happened to them, 24. and said: The Lord has delivered all this land into our hands, and all its inhabitants are prostrate with fear.
