Whether the day, or the month, of this preparation be sought, [it is] to be known [that] here can be had a reckoning either of those [things] which hitherto have been said, or of those which afterwards shall be said. In the former manner, two [things] are asked. One, whether after the [30] days of the Mosaic funeral and mourning this preparation was indicted [proclaimed]. Some deny [it] — but by a certain necessity (of which [I spoke] in its place) [they are] driven [to it]. But nonetheless, altogether, [it is] to be established [that] after those 30 days elapsed this indiction was made. First, because it was made after the discourse of the Lord bidding that Joshua be of good spirit, and cross the Jordan; but by the first little question of this chapter, that [discourse] was had after the mourning for Moses. Second, [because] the thirty-day mourning of Aaron and Miriam was so quietly conducted that nothing at all of public affairs was meanwhile done (Num. 20) — how then would [less] honor have been held [rendered] to Moses? Third: To the same [opinion] subscribe the sentence of Abulensis (from q. 39), Arias, Masius, Cajetan; and of the more ancient, Josephus (bk. 5 ch. 1), Seder Olam, R. Isaias, and Ralbag. — The other [thing asked] is: Whether on the same day on which the Lord had spoken [to Joshua], Joshua commanded these [things] to be proposed to the people. He would nod assent [yes], whosoever weighs in [his] mind the virtue and obedience of Joshua himself. For how would he delay, and draw out delays, when he had heard Him saying, v. 2: “Rise, and cross this Jordan”? And therefore not—

—[not] absurdly Cajetan esteems [that] the Lord discoursed with Joshua well in the morning, toward the dawn; but afterwards, on the day a little more grown [i.e. later], these commands [were] given to the people. In the latter manner, more [things are] to be called into disquisition — namely, whether at the same time the explorers [spies] were sent, or truly before [or] after; and likewise, whether this same time is repeated below ch. 3, or [is] diverse. But of the individual [points] more aptly afterward; and then what the month here, or the day, was, will be established, ch. 2 quest. 5, p. 1.
