Prolegomenon VIII. What is the division of the whole book?

This book is divided into two parts. One [comprises those things] which were done at the very entrance of the promised land, and, as it were, at the first threshold — before the crossing of the Jordan; the other proposes [those things] which [were done] after that same crossing. Now that first threshold of the promised land was the last station of the Egyptian journey, and of the whole pilgrimage through the vast wilderness — about which it was spoken in Exodus. Further, three little sections of the prior part can be reckoned. The first shows their preparation to cross the Jordan (ch. 1). The second, the sending of the spies (ch. 2). The third, the crossing itself to that land (chs. 3 & 4).
