All those utilities of the divinely-inspired scriptures which were handed down in the Biblical Prolegomena are in this book. But these especially stand out: that it demonstrates GOD the Best and Greatest’s excellent and most-certain faithfulness in [His] promises; that it gives a distinguished specimen of the best Prince — in war and in peace, toward GOD and [toward his] subjects; that it shows peace, abundance of goods, and all prosperity to be from GOD, and to be given abundantly by Him when He is religiously worshipped in the manner that is fitting; that it sets before the eyes of all the geography of the land (which the whole Scripture everywhere never fails to mention), and a certain [thing] as it were a picture; finally, that it sets before us the most illustrious Type of CHRIST JESUS our Lord and Savior, and a certain [thing] as it were a mirror. Whence, on this very book (homily 4), Origen [says]: “This book indicates to us not so much the deeds of the son of Nave, as it depicts to us the sacraments [mysteries] of JESUS my Lord.”
