Question VIII. (marg.) Which hill [was it] onto which Moses ascended?

In the Latin it is said, indeed, absolutely, on the top of the hill; but in the Hebrew and Greek, on the top of this hill — so that that very hill, of which a little before it had been spoken, seems to be pointed out: namely Horeb. But Origen notes (homily 11, cited) that Moses ascends the top not of a mountain, but of a hill. But that [is] not firm enough. For, although these two [words] are wont to be distinguished — as is clear when it is said Mountains and hills (Isaiah 40, v. 4; ch. 42, v. 15; Psalm 147, v. 9) — yet, while here it is said not simply hill, but the top of it, it is shown [that] that rock (whence Moses had before drawn so great a force of waters) was on some hill of Mount Horeb; but that now he ascended higher, to the very peak or top of that hill, which was much loftier, and [was] already on the mountain itself.
