Second Commentary: The Judgment of Reason

Theorem XI. The Christian revelation, which teaches that men who die unexpiated are immediately to be punished by perpetual punishments, far from being contrary to reason, harmonizes amicably with reason.

30. Demonstration. A revelation which numbers among the heads of its doctrine this one also—that those who die infected by sin are condemned to perpetual punishments—is not contrary to reason, but harmonizes with reason.1 Therefore the Christian revelation, which in fact embraces this head of doctrine, far from conflicting with reason, accords with reason.
