CCLIII. Corollary XLIX

COROLLARY XLIX.

In order that the force and account of the consequent will may also be examined from every quarter and intimately known—

—a fourfold object of it must chiefly be distinguished. For to it most certainly pertain: a) the decree concerning good works and merits, and concerning the greatest of all merits, such as final perseverance; b) the decree concerning tolerating the transgression of the law and permitting sins; c) the decree concerning inflicting punishments, whether temporal or eternal; and d) finally, the decree concerning dispensing rewards and rendering the crown of justice. But with respect to this fourfold object, the consequent will is hypothetical and has fore-shining before it: 1) knowledge of the restored order; 2) knowledge of the aids which accompany the restored order; 3) knowledge of free consent or dissent; and lastly, 4) knowledge either of final perseverance or of the human will which will have hardened itself even unto the end against the incitements of mercy.
