COROLLARY XXVIII.
As regards the character and nature of the first and antecedent will, it can be brought into controversy whether the will is proper and interior, or, on the contrary, exterior and metaphorical. But the Fathers resolve a controversy of this kind with such perspicuity and such weight of statements that they cut off every occasion for doubt, even the slightest. For no less do the words by which they distinguish and name it demonstrate that the first and antecedent will must be believed not improper but proper and interior, not metaphorical but true, than does the exquisite abundance and copiousness of περιφράσεων, circumlocutions, by which they embellish and declare its character and disposition1. Certainly, both the words are such, and the circumlocutions are so arranged, that they cannot be transferred to an improper and metaphorical will unless the usage of speech is overturned.
