CCXVII. Corollary XII

COROLLARY XII.

Wherefore a twofold state of humanity after the original transgression must be accurately distinguished: one in Adam, the other in Christ; one with the work of man considered, and the other with the indulgence of intervening goodness considered; finally, one before God condemning humanity in Adam, and the other before God restoring humanity in Christ. For just as all humanity perished in Adam, and from him the state of perdition burst forth as from a corrupted fountain, so in Christ all humanity was restored, and from him the state of salvation flowed forth. Just as, with the work of man considered, absolutely every hope of salvation withered away, so, with the indulgence of intervening goodness considered, the hope of salvation blossomed again. And just as before God condemning humanity in Adam no one could be saved, so before God restoring humanity in Christ there is no one who cannot, and indeed ought not, promise himself life and safety.
