ZOLEIKA, Daughter of Pharaoh, and Wife of Potiphar. The irregular Passion which this Woman conceived for Joseph, is sufficiently known from the sacred Books. The Mussulman Authors, and the Orientals in general, have often recourse to the Example of these two Lovers, as they call them, to recommend Sentiments of Love, not only what is natural and human, but also that which is supernatural and divine: Something like what obtains among Christians, when they use the Sentiments of the Spouse in the Canticles of Solomon, to raise up the Soul to God, and to inspire it with such Transports as it ought to have towards its Creator. The Reader may see what we have said of this Woman under the Article JOSEPH.
