SYRO-PHENICIA. This is Phenicia properly so call’d, of which Sidon or Zidon was the Capital; which having by Right of Conquest been united to the Kingdom of Syria, join’d its old Name of Phenicia to that of Syria; Just as Palestine was call’d Palestine of Syria, because it was consider’d as making a Part of Syria. In the Gospel the Canaanitish Woman is call’d a SyrophenicianMark vii. 26. by St. Mark, because she was of Phenicia, which was then look’d upon as making a Part of Syria, and was in the Jurisdiction of the Governor of this Province. Matt. xv. 22, 24. Gen. x. 15St. Matthew, who wrote in Hebrew or Syriac, calls her a Canaanitish Woman, because this Country was really peopled by the Canaanites, Sidon being the eldest Son of Canaan.
