Siene

SIENE. The Arabian Geographers give the Name of Ajaan to the City of Siene, and place it in the Country which they call Al-vahat, where are still to be seen many fine Ruins, which prove that this Province was heretofore very rich and populous. D’Herbelot. Bibl. Orient. p. 141.Siene is very small in Compass, but well-peopled, both with its own Inhabitants and Strangers, who carry on a Trade there, on Occasion of the Mines of Gold and Silver, which are not far from thence. ‘Tis also said, that the only Mine of Oriental Emeralds, which is known in the World, is to be found in its Territory, which besides abounds in all Sorts of Fruits, altho’ it lies under the Tropic. The Mountains of Alaki, and of Giannadel, where are the great Cataracts of the Nile, inclose its whole Territory. The first of these Mountains is to the East of it, and the other to the West. They reckon five small Days Journies from this City to that of Cous, which is more Northerly, and in the Longitude of 61 Degrees, 30 Minutes, and in the Latitude of 24 Degrees, 10 Minutes. They are both in the second Climate.
