Side

John xix. 34.SIDE, Latus. The Evangelist St. John tells us, that when Jesus Christ was upon the Cross, his Side was open’d by a Soldier, who pierc’d it with his Spear or Lance, and that from this Wound there proceeded Water and Blood : This Soldier is generally call’d Longinus, and they make a Saint of him. See LONGINUS. St. John does not acquaint us which of his two Sides were pierced. The Arabic and Ethiopic Versions, and the Gospel of the Infancy of Jesus Christ, translated from the Arabic, and some of the Antients, a read the right Side ; but others think,1 that he was pierced on his left Side. The Poet Prudentius says, that he was pierced from Side to Side ; Per utrumque Latus.
