Shephelah

SHEPHELAH, or Sephela;1 this Hebrew Word signifies an open Field, or a Plain. The Greek and Latin Interpreters generally translate it by a Plain; but the Seventy have sometimes preserved the Word Sephela2. Eusebius and St. Jerome inform us,3 that even in their Time, the whole flat Country, which is to the North and West about Eleutheropolis, was call’d Sephela. Simon Maccabæus fortify’d the City of Adida in Sephela, or in the Plain of which we are speaking.
