Rhoda

RHODA, a young Maid who dwelt in the House of Mary the Mother of John- Mark, who coming to open the Door to a Person that knocked at it, was so transported with Joy, at hearing Peter’s Voice, whom she thought to be in Prison, and who had but just then been miraculously deliver’d from it by an Angel1, that, without staying to open the Door, she ran back to acquaint the Believers with it, who were then assembled in the House. They look’d upon her as visionary or mad, but she still maintain’d she heard Peter’s Voice. The Apostle continuing still to knock, she went back, and open’d the Door to him. We know no other Circumstance of the Life of Rhoda ; for, as to her Exile and Martyrdom, which, ‘tis pretended, she suffer’d in the Isle of Sardinia2, we place them in the Number of Apocryphal Stories.
