Plagiary

1 Tim. i. 10. ‘Ανδραποδισταῖς. In the English, Menstealers.PLAGIARY. St. Paul, writing to Timothy, places Plagiaries among the greatest Miscreants. The Word Plagiary, in this Passage, signifies one that steals away a Freeborn Person, to sell him for a Slave. Also the Name of Plagiary was given to those who bought or detain’d a Free-man as a Slave. Thus was Joseph sold by his Brethren, who therefore became Plagiaries. ‘Tis the greatest Injury and Insult that can be committed against a Man, thus to rob him of his Liberty. The Word Plagiary has also been extended to such, as appropriate to themselves the Works or Writings of another, who copy them, and give them out as their own.
