PINE, Pinus, a Tree sufficiently known, and of the Nature of the Fir-tree. Isaiah says,1 That Man has planted a Pine, of which he has made an Idol. The Hebrew Word Oren, by the Septuagint and St. Jerom is translated by a Pine. Others interpret it by an Elm2. In another Place of the same Prophet,3 we find also Pine in the Vulgate: But the Hebrew has Tashur, which the Septuagint renders the Cedar; other Interpreters, the Elm4. Lastly, In the Chronicles,5 mention is made of the Wood of the Pine: But the Hebrew reads Algumim6; which, probably signifies in general, Trees that are fat and resinous, or those Trees that produce Gum. In the First Book of Kings, chap. x. 11. in the Hebrew is read Almugim, instead of Algumim. The Rabbins explain it by Coral; others, by Ebony; and others, by Brasil. True it is, we know but little of the Nature of the greatest Part of the Trees and Vegetables mention’d in the Hebrew Text. See J. H. Ursin. Arboretum Biblicum.
