PHYGELLUS, or Phigellus, was a Christian of Asia, who happening to be at 2 Tim. i. 15.Rome while St. Paul was there in Prison, in the 65th Year of Christ, forsook him in his Necessity, with Hermogenes. Aversi sunt a me omnes qui in Asia sunt, ex quibus est Phygellus & Hermogenes. Phygellus is unknown upon any other Account but this, which by no means is to his Honour. Metaphrastes in his Discourse upon St. Peter and St. Paul, says, that the Apostle having1 having made Phygellus Bishop of Ephesus, this Man seduced the converted Jews, and prevailed with them to renounce the Faith. We read several Things concerning Phile-tus and Hermogenes in the Life of St. James major, written by Abdias. There is something of Probability that this Author has put Philetus for Phygellus, as we read it in the Latin Edition of Sixtus Quintus. But these Circumstances are altogether as uncertain as those related by Metaphrastes. Ambrosiaster says, that In 2 Tim. i. 15.Phygellus and Hermogenes were Deceivers and Hypocrites, who attended the Apostle only to learn what they could from him, and afterwards to calumniate him, and raise Persecutions against him. But when they saw themselves discover’d, they departed from him.
