2. PHLEGON, a Freed-man of Adrian. He compos’d a History digested by the Olympiads, as far as the Year of Christ 140. In this History he takes Notice, that in the fourth Year of the two hundred and second Olympiad, which determines about the Middle of the 33d Year of the common Era, there happen’d the greatest Eclipse of the Sun that had ever been seen, a the Stars being seen in the Heavens at Noon-day; that afterwards there was a great Earthquake in Bithynia. Several Criticks believe, that this was that Darkness that happen’d at the Death of Jesus Christ. ‘Tis upon this Account that we put the Name of Phlegon here.
