Pharez

Genesis xxxviii. 27 28, &c.PHAREZ, Son of Judah and Tamar. Tamar being just ready to lye in, found herself with Child of Twins. Pharez appeared first, and putting his Arm out, he immediately drew it back again. The Midwife tied a Piece of scarlet String about his Arm, saying, Why do you bring Divisions into the Family? or, Why have you broken the Wall of Separation? meaning that by this Motion he had disturb’d the Order of Birth, and given an Occasion for a Scruple, to know which was the First-born. And from hence he had the Name of Pharez given him. The Year of the Birth of these two Twins is not set down in Scripture. The Sons of Pharez were Hesron and Hamul. Numb. xxvi. 20, 21.
