Phalanx

PHALANX. This is a Greek Word, given to the Macedonian Soldiery. The Phalanx was a Battalion of Two thousand or even of Eight thousand Footmen, of the best Troops of the Army. St. Jerome sometimes makes use of this Word to express the Troops of Israel, at a Time when the Macedonian Phalanges were then unknown. Goliah1 stood and defy’d the Phalanges of Israel. The Hebrew reads it, the Ranks, or the Army of Israel drawn up in Battle Array.
