Pelethites

PELETHITES. The Pelethites and the Cherethites are famous under the Reign of King David1. These were the most valiant Men of his Army, and the Guards of his Person. They were originally Philistines, of the City of Gath What we have said on the Article Cherethites may be consulted. The Word Peletim seems to be formed from Philistim, and it may signifie Men that break, seperate, &c. in like Manner as Cherethim signifies Men that destroy or exterminate; Denominations that exactly suit with the Pelethites and Cherethites. Some think that under this Name are to be understood the Members of the great Sanhedrim Others derive Pelethim from the Hebrew Pala, or Nipla, which signifies to do Wonders, and they think there to have been prodigious or miraculous Men.
