Mitre

MITRE, Mitra; Mention is made in Scripture of the Mitres of the Priests and of those of Women. We have already described those of the Priests, under the Article CIDARIS. Isaiah speaks of those of Women1, Auferet Dominus, —— armillas & mitras. The Hebrew Word Haraloth, here translated Mitras, signifies to tremble, to waver. The Syrian and Arabian Women at this Day have commonly upon their Heads a silver Mitre called Arkie, made in Form of a Sugar-loaf, and encompassed with a Veil of black Silk, edged with Pearls and precious Stones.
